As a fan of string instruments, I have an appreciation for talented individuals and their passion for music. String instruments generate a very soothing sound, especially the cello. When played by a professional, it feels as if the cello is talking to you, creating a magnificent system of communication.
I recently ran across a project by cellist Daniel Sperry.
Daniel, who has been playing the cello since the young age of 4, is a composer and former member of the Nashville Symphony. What caught my eye about Daniel was his passion and creativity in integrating his love for both the cello and poetry into a beautiful masterpiece.
As an avid follower of transformative poetry, Daniel is currently working on producing an album based on the poems of one of his favorite poets, William Stafford. Named after Stafford's poem Cutting Loose, the album aims to bring two different worlds together. In each piece, Daniel brings to life the uplifting words of Stafford by combining them with instrumental music, specifically the cello.
When I spoke with Daniel, he noted that the reason he enjoys Stafford's poems is because they take you from the ordinary to the extraordinary very quickly. His poems create a new world of feelings, portraying a journey to be taken. Daniel is currently on the path of "finding the places where these two can meet, and assisting the two to create something fresh and unmistakable. A new world. A new breath."
Daniel's work is captivating. It draws you in, as he shares his passions in a very intriguing manner. As he works to put together an ensemble that will make this album become a reality, it's clear that Cutting Loose will not be his last album that is fully focused on a single poet.
Daniel's music has the potential of reaching many due to its uniqueness. And considering his performance encompasses other well known poets as well, such as Rumi and Hafiz, he will be able to connect with individuals from various cultures.
Personally, I look forward to starting or ending my days with Daniel's work, as it will assist in relaxation and reflection. Considering Daniel performs house concerts on a regular basis, I hope to have the opportunity of experiencing his work in person in the near future.
Overall, the integration of music with poetry POPs.
