Crowdfunding is such a beautiful thing. People from all over the planet from different backgrounds with varying perspectives and a wealth of ideas and creativity come together to produce something beautiful. Okay, maybe that is a bit idealistic but it doesn’t diminish the fact that crowdfunding is changing the way we create and do business. Today’s case in point of channeling creativity into something beautiful comes from Hong Kong. A team of eight, headed by co-founders Chanasinj Sachdev and Neill Myers have been working on a novel concept since late 2014 and are now introducing it to Indiegogo backers to bring it to fruition. Oh, and I almost forget to mention a key team member, Bubby the office cat!
The concept that the team has been working so diligently on is Kraftka—sneakers by the people, for the people. Beatriz Tejeiro, the campaigner for the group, describes it this way, “Kraftka defines itself a revolutionary sneaker design platform that empowers members to profit from their creativity”. The premise of Kraftka centers on crowdsourcing, in fact Kraftka has an interface that connects a community of artists and shoe enthusiasts. The platform combines the typical ecommerce functionality of browsing options by genre or style with the connectivity of social media by allowing follows of specific artists.
Tejeiro further explains, “Kraftka provides a very user-friendly interface that allows users to upload their designs from any device and get it to the store in very simple steps. It gives the opportunity to designers, artists or creative individuals to own their own line of Sneakers, enjoy a passive income and to track their sales in real time”.
It is important to note that each pair of shoes sold on Kraftka earns its creator a $10 commission. Designers have profile pages and can share their creations on Shoe Racks and place favorites in Wish Racks. But don’t worry if you are not the creative type because you can peruse many shoes currently available on the site and expect more additions weekly.
The base shoe, named the Sputnik, is an all-white high-top similar to a Converse shoe. This is the open canvas. All designs are printed in high-definition and are machine washable. Other perks include t-shirts and tote bags.
This idea is beyond great. As I type this write-up I am toggling my vision back and forth from the computer screen to my vision board and wondering how I can put that on a pair of custom shoes. Today’s demand for creativity and individual expression will be catalysts for Kraftka and the fact that they make it so easy to create and buy will further amplify that success.
“We are at the forefront of a fashion revolution and it all begins with people's feet. We want Kraftka to create designers; trendsetters. It's a company who puts fashion in the hands of the community”, says Tejeiro.
Kraftka will be using just-in-time inventory management as each pair of shoes will only be manufactured after it has been purchased. This contributes to their zero waste policy to mitigate environmental impact.
I am excited for this campaign and can’t wait to POP my feet into a pair myself.
