As it can found in our team's bio, it's no secret that I have a substantial amount of love for Nashville, TN. But, it doesn't mean that I'm not a big fan of other cities as well. This stands very true for San Francisco, as it is one of my favorite places to visit here in the States. Whether it's the start-up culture, the city's rich history, the amazing food, or the beautiful scenery, I don't think I'll ever get enough of the Bay Area. Every time I visit, I find myself falling more and more in love with San Francisco, and I know I'm not the only one.
Johanna Lehmann, a current San Fran resident, has enjoyed her time so much that she is genuinely interested in sharing her passion for the city with others. However, not in a manner you would normally expect.
Johanna has written an autofiction (a term used to refer to a form of fictionalized autobiography) called How to love San Francisco - One year in the City by the Bay in order to portray the beauty that she sees. Interestingly enough, the style that she has written the novel is pretty unique. It mixes the basics of story telling with the components of a travelogue, keeping the reader entertained and informed at the same time.
The book is about a young German female, in her mid-twenties, who finds herself in unexpected hurdles and adventures in San Francisco. As Johanna puts it, the book has "a rousing, fresh twist on the fictional memoir... it takes you on a year-long excursion of life in the city - loaded with culture clashes, international friendships, and inside information of what San Francisco is all about."
When I spoke to Johanna about the book, she expressed that although the story line is fictional, the information that she provides about the city as a whole comes from her personal experiences. Her experiences about the restaurants, bars, scenic locations, getting settled in San Fran, and having an outside perspective on the American culture helped her bring the story all together.
Johanna wrote the book back in 2012, in German, and it became a hit within the country's reading community. It's popularity helped it reach the number three spot on Amazon Germany. Currently, she is channeling the crowdfunding world in order to bring to life an English version of the book. By doing so, she will be able to share her passions about the city with a broader scope of individuals.
Potentially, How to love San Francisco - One year in the City by the Bay could very well end up as a top seller on Amazon again. With so many travelers around the globe visiting San Francisco, Johanna's book could serve as a great guide, while keeping the reader engaged and entertained. Personally, after reading the book, I would want to checkout all of the locations mentioned, bringing to life the story that Johanna expresses in the book.
Overall, a book written about an individual's love for a city, using a unique concept, POPs.
* On a side note, considering Johanna gets her inspiration for writing by travelling, I hope she gives Nashville a visit, prompting her to write a book about that city.
