As the age of self-awareness continues to grow in today's society, more and more technological advancements are developed to help us maintain/move towards a healthy life style. To add value to this movement, Isabel Hoffmann and Stephen Watson have built a device that will change the way we view and understand the food we consume.
Hoffmann and Watson's efforts in revolutionizing knowledge about what we intake have lead to the creation of TellSpec, a combination of "a spectrometer and a unique algorithm to tell you the allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories, and ingredients in your food or beverages." By using a scanner, TellSpec sends the information about the scanned food to your phone, giving you the knowledge that you need in matter of seconds. However, TellSpec's features don't end there. It has the capability to report what types of foods you are sensitive to based on how you feel. It calculates the amount of toxic chemicals you intake, in order to remain within the recommended level. Lastly, it records your daily vitamin and mineral intakes, showing you where you are throughout the day.
TellSpec has the potential of being a game changer in a world where information is not always accurate when it comes to food. It will provide the opportunity for individuals to truly understand what is in their food and beverage. Whether it's possible or not, the next phase for TellSpec may be moving away from the hand-held scanner to a phone friendly add-on, in which the scanner is small enough to be attached to the phone.
Overall, the concept of knowing what's in my food POPs.
