It is a pretty cool moment when an entrepreneur takes his or her idea to crowdfunding and has it validated by thousands of backers. It is an added benefit when the product’s quality exceeds that of the long-standing commercial giants. Today, I want to introduce you to such a product.
Will Simon and his brother Vince, of Washington, DC are self-described lifelong athletes. They use all the gear from household brand names, such as Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour. The brothers realize that the sports industry is growing and growing fast. This is especially so for the niche of sports apparel. Like the true entrepreneurs that they are, they know that they can do better than what the market offers in this space.
Will and Vince have been working on this project for over a year. Will’s former associations at the US Chamber of Commerce have proven invaluable, as he has leveraged them substantially to bring to fruition this venture.
The venture I am referring to is a sports apparel line called Sivil. As touted in its tagline, Sivil guarantees to keep you cooler and drier than the leading brands can, namely Nike, Under Armour and Adidas—and by a whopping 30%. This is not just some hollow marketing ploy. Sivil has outperformed the above mentioned brands when tested by the Hohenstein Institute in Germany.
Traditionally, performance apparel is coated with special chemicals to cause them to wick moisture and heat from the individual wearing it, but not Sivil. Sivil utilizes a special fabric, CoolCore, to naturally do what other brands achieve with chemicals. Not only this, but the silver-infused fabric also keeps the garment from smelling, as it decreases bacteria growth that cause odors. Furthermore, Sivil also provides 45+ UV protection from the sun.
As explained by Sivil, “we were able to link up with some scientists and developers who patented a revolutionary new fabric technology. We worked with them to integrate that tech into an amazing new line of performance apparel and after testing the fabric up against the top sportswear brands in the world, we knew we had raised the bar for performance fabrics.”
Sivil offers many different cuts and colors of the performance apparel. B,y already surpassing its first stretch goal and working towards the next, more options are expected.
Will and Vince have high hopes for the future and naturally they should. When I asked Will what his goals with Sivil were over the next 5-10 years, he was enthusiastic. “The plan is to take the industry by storm. I want to be competing with Under Armour and NIke and hopefully dive into shoes in the near future”, said Will.
With the accreditation from the Hohenstein Institute and the +$175,000 raised so far, Sivil will clearly make a ripple in the immediate future. The question for Will and Vance is how big of a ripple will they make and how soon can they make it.
On a personal level, Will admitted that he would love to pick up the sports contract from his old Alma Mater, Ohio State University. He noted that the current contract with Nike is due to expire in the next few years.
Sivil will make more than a ripple; it’s going to POP the industry.
