Long live style and authentic Italian craftsmanship. If you are at all a fan of handbags, purses or carry-ons then you will greatly appreciate what this Kickstarter has to offer. With the tag line “unconventional luxury at a fair price” Paolo Fabozzi, the campaign owner, wishes to disrupt the brick-and-mortar retail price markups by delivering made-to-order handcrafted leather bags.
“[Our] mission is to innovate while still respecting and enhancing Italian tradition,” says Fabozzi.
The four cofounders of the Naples, Italy-based operation are passionate about affordable, quality luxury. Paolo is the acting Chief Executive Officer with 10 years’ experience in investment banking and consulting. Marica, the Chief Brand Officer, emerges from a tax law background. Sergio, with a specialized career in international organizations, is the Chief Marketing Officer. And last but not least the Chief Creative Officer role falls to Andrea, an entrepreneur several times over.
The product is UGLYS—an acrostic definition highlighting the brand elements of Unconventional, Glamour, Luxury, You, and Superior. It also undoubtedly is a clever antonym to raise awareness for the anything but ugly line of products. Furthermore beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this case as the products are mixed and matched to customers specific liking.
“UGLYS caters to the needs of a new customer target and appeals to those who are fashion-conscious but seek total independence from homologation, and are detached from mass produced luxury items,” explained Fabozzi. “The idea to launch a brand where the customer is involved in the entire creation and production is an interesting and forward thinking concept.”
UGLYS uses type A French calf leather which is then tanned and handcrafted in Italy. The bags are assembled according to customer specifications and then lined with an Italian cotton canvas and adorned with palladium coated buckles and zipper(s).
But how do you customize UGLYS? To start, select from five bag models and then specify a size that fits your usage requirement. Next add handles and straps from three offerings and a base shape from four offerings.
With the bag’s architecture decided the final flare of personality turns UGLYS into beauty. There are three leather options in 12 colors. The interior lining of the bag has seven options and the zippers, stitching and leather edges each have 12 color options.

UGLYS has been selected and a Kickstarter Staff Pick but more impressive than that is the financial backing received from the Kickstarter community. Fabozzi commented that UGLYS “is rapidly winning fans and reached the funding goal of $20,000 only 5 hours into the Kickstarter campaign”. They have since introduced a stretch goal to push that figure to $100,000.
When questioned about UGLYS longer-term future Fabozzi indicated that it would keep the focus within the fashion industry and just as importantly it would keep true to its tenets of quality at a low price and Italian tailoring.
