There was a time in history when the textile mills of England clothed almost the whole world! However, that era is long gone and in recent years textile manufacturing in UK has taken the backseat. Drake & Hutch’s British-designed, British-made socks are an attempt to revive the heyday of textile production in UK. While working as a buyer of high street brands, Peter McGuiness, the owner of Drake & Hutch, was “always disappointed at the amount of clothing that was made in the UK, especially by brands that promoted themselves as being British”. Peter wanted to find a remedy to this bleak situation in the home industry. “I wanted to create a label that brought textile production back to the UK and supported British jobs”, says Peter.
Thus the Drake & Hutch was born. Based in Lancashire at the North-West England, this young business has partnered with the oldest sock mills of UK to supply good quality, comfortable and stylish British-made socks. They strive to bring a resurgence of skilled, good quality textile production in UK that has been long lost. To this end, they have collaborated with the best cotton growers, millers and socks-makers.
The traditional mid-calf socks marketed by Drake & Hutch are said to highlight the smart personality of its wearer and express certain coolness. The manufacturers are proud to declare that their British-designed, British-made socks are worn by celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Kit Harington and Donald Sutherland. The socks are completely hand-knitted at family owned workshops using ethically-grown cottons. While looking for a suitable garment manufacturer to partner with, Peter says, “I was keen to work with a factory that was family owned and shared our own values of quality and integrity”. Subsequently they teamed up with one of the oldest British family businesses who were making socks since 1882.
Drake & Hutch socks are bright in colors and the non-allergic cotton of the socks ensures 100% comfort. You are free to choose from a variety of color combinations, designs like Chunky Knit or the Fine Knit and various pack sizes that are available. The socks are meant for versatile uses and compatible with all your casual or business wears. Drake & Hutch’s British-made socks meet all the international standards of Color Bleed, Washing Shrinkage, Fiber ‘Bobbling’ and ‘Wearing out’ and passed national and international quality assessment tests with distinction. “Our focus is very much on quality over quantity”, Peter claims.
Peter seems confident about the future of their campaign for crowdfunding on Indiegogo: “getting our story out to the right people has also been a challenge. Convincing customers to buy socks at a slightly higher price has been tricky”. But while they cannot compete with the cheap socks imported from China and the Far East in terms of prices, Drake & Hutch’s cotton socks are clearly much better in terms of the quality and certainly more comfortable as well as durable. They have already secured enough funds to manufacture 500 pairs of our handmade British socks which will be delivered by the Christmas this year. There is no doubt that this young business will be able to expand its horizon in near future and more British companies will follow suit to set up textile manufactures in UK.
