Have you ever fallen asleep in a hammock? I hope you have because it is an extremely refreshing napping experience. However, no longer will this experience be limited to napping as it has been extended into the realm of sleep—wahoo!
A husband and wife duo from Boise, Idaho has introduced a new soon-to-be household item to camping. The married entrepreneurs, Lance and Julia Williams, are outdoor enthusiasts. Lance is a brand manager at an eyewear company and co-founder Sioux City Watch Co. Julia is a health nut and the creative genius behind the new venture which is currently on Kickstarter.
The Williams were discussing some camping gear combos that would be neat to have when the idea to combine a sleeping bag with a hammock was initiated. “Julia and I were pretty jazzed on the idea, so we ran with it”, says Mr. Williams.
The combination is called the Bison Bag and as mentioned above it is a hammock immersed in a sleeping bag. The Bison Bag is made of polyester. The sleeping bag measures 190 x 100 centimeters while the hammock measures 98 x 280. It can support up to 215 pounds and the whole thing weighs five-and-a-half pounds—and that includes the rope and carabiners.
The Bison Bag keeps the camper warm by using its triple layer insulation. The first layer is the sleeping bag which envelops the hammock on all sides like a cocoon. The next insulated layer is a pocket of air that resides between the underside of the hammock and the sleeping bag. This pocket of air is warmed by your body heat. Lastly the hammock itself is the third layer. The Bison Bag is good for temperatures of 55 degrees or warmer.
The Bison Bag takes about 30 seconds to set up, not bad, but it is even quicker to back on Kickstarter.
Already featured in Sunset Magazine and several online publications, Bison Bag is off to a great start for the campaign. But even with the media coverage Mr. Williams sees the need for more exposure. “It’s an awesome product and everyone that see’s it is pretty pumped about it, but it’s just hitting the market of people that would actually purchase it and use it.
Crowdfunding entrepreneurs often run into problems with exposing their products to the more mainstream audiences outside of loyalists and Kickstarter junkies. The Williams plan to do this though and have already surpassed their Kickstarter goal which is a great sign for the overarching company Clayborne Outdoor.
The Bison Bag being the first product line of Clayborne Outdoor the Williams are eager to market the product. “We plan to mainly focus on the Bison Bag, different colors and features, but we also want to create other innovative ideas that you can use camping and hiking.”
The Bison Bag looks to be the POP that Clayborne Outdoor needs.
