For the outdoor buff a time piece should be practical and functional under extreme circumstances—never holding back its owner. Of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Ryan McDonnell couldn’t agree more. As a long-time enthusiast of fashion and multi-purpose products McDonnell has taken to Kickstarter to bring to light an idea of his own.
The Sharkfin Survival Watch is made for the outdoors. Its stainless steel case and hardened mineral glass face envelope its internal Japanese movement. The Sharkfin is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters, displays the date and has an illuminating face. The six-and-a-half inch military paracord bracelet has a Velcro adjustment for a snug and secure fit and comes in either black, red or green. This particular batch of Sharkfin Survival Watches is dubbed the “KS16” meaning Kickstarter 2016 and will be engraved on the back of the watch for backers.
The “survival” aspect of the watch is the paracord bracelet. For an item that you carry every day Sharkfin adds nearly countless additional features at your disposal. Some of these uses highlighted on Sharkfin’s Kickstarter page include securing a tent, making a tourniquet, fastening a splint, anchoring a skiff to a tree, hanging food in a tree away from bears, and making a fishing line from the inner threads of the paracord. In short McDonnell says “if you search online for 100 ways to use paracord or 10 ways paracord can save your life, you will not be short of content.”
Other perks of the campaign include logoed paraphernalia; a shirt, beanie and duffel bag. Backers can get the Sharkfin Survival Watch with a $74-82 backing (depending on early-bird availability).
Like many crowdfunding entrepreneurs McDonnell has had his fair share of challenges with the campaign—namely around awareness. “We have a very unique product and we have identified our target users. The challenges are getting the product out into the domain. As a part time project so far, we can’t afford advertising so it’s been challenging getting Sharkfin in the news.” explains McDonnell.
However, Sharkfin is doing its best to get its product out to the masses. McDonnell shared with Freshpreneur that they “are currently talking with Touch Of Modern on a partnership in the future and would like to see more of this in the future as well as working with small independent retailers”.
Sharkfin’s long-term goal is to create a strong brand identity by 1) increasing the scope of product offerings and 2) creating a reputation within online retailers. Online shopping is continuing its upward growth trend and will be a vital component of Sharkfin Survival Watches—or any manufacturer or retailer.
