As I travel Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia, it has become clear to me that I need a better bag—a tweener, if you will—something in between backpack and duffel. This problem is surely not limited to traveling expats. In actuality it is more pronounced domestically. The daily grind amongst the gym, office, and 30,000 feet usually require a separate bag.
As it is in other cases, the solution can only come after much labor with current product offering fails. No exception to this, entrepreneur Peter Kao has decided to fix the problem of multiple bags, for multiple occasions, and he is calling this fix SUB (sports utility bag).
Referring to the inspiration for the bag, Kao shared, “I go to the gym often and see many people carrying gym bags…I started to wonder if the design could fulfill the need of a modern/active lifestyle. I found that people who go to the gym early in the morning often go straight to work. And people who go to the gym in the afternoon often just came back from work or school…Having this in mind, I wanted to design a bag that they could carry to gym and work, a bag that could carry their, laptop, shoes, clothes, water bottle and all their daily essentials.”
SUB is designed to be versatile and has a unique aerodynamic look. The exterior is made of water resistant 1680 denier ballistic nylon, while the interior is lined with 600 denier nylon. SUB meets airline carry-one dimensions (22 x 11 x 10 in) and can be worn as duffel or a backpack with its detachable straps.
There are many pockets and compartments in SUB, including a neoprene padded laptop compartment, a ventilated shoe pocket, an iPhone sized pocket, a hidden water bottle compartment, a soft micro-fleece pocket for delicates, etc. All hardware is made of Zamak 5 zinc alloy, and the zippers are also coated with YKK water-resistant urethane.
SUB is a product line of the larger Keep Pursuing brand, which currently offers a shoulder bag dubbed the FaceOff due to its interchangeable outer flap. For the SUB, the goal is to eventually provide color and size options. As for the larger brand, Keep Pursuing, the focus will remain on bags aimed to those with an active and modern lifestyle. Making the bags will rely on quality, style, and convenience, while the design projects positivity, energy, and freedom.
With the Kickstarter campaign, Kao has felt the pressure that arises from the lull period that all crowdfunding campaigns face mid-campaign, but he is holding out optimistic.
“We reached 33% or our goal in the first couple of days, but after our campaign had been pushed down to the forth page by the new projects, we kind lost the momentum. Design is not difficult for us; we have lots of passion for it. Promoting our campaign is our biggest challenge. I think many other creators on Kickstarter may feel the same way.”
Back SUB on Kickstarter today. We think it is a solid POP.
