“My music has recently evolved to a really exciting point”, exclaimed an enthusiastic Mikaela Kahn. The 24-year old songwriter and singer of Denton, Texas, and recent Jazz Studies graduate of the University of North Texas in Dallas (UNT-D), is launching her promising career in the music industry. Kahn said that her parents first noticed her proclivity towards music at age four and was soon participating in a choir. The rest, as they say, is history. Mikaela Kahn’s style draws heavily from the genres of POP and R&B—a Sara Bareilles type. Last year her original song Fall With You, from her 2012 extended play (EP) release, won first place in the Indie International Songwriting Contest 2013. Kahn has performed in many venues “from the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, [to] Madison Square Garden in New York, to the Prophet Bar in Dallas”.
Her latest EP Milk & Honey, will be released in September of this year. But, to make it her best music release yet, Kahn is seeking support from friends and strangers alike on her Kickstarter campaign page. A $10 contribution can secure a digital download of the EP but there are plenty of perks worth browsing, including a private acoustic show in which Mikaela Kahn will bring the party to you. Milk & Honey promises to deliver heat-felt soul to the music fan. “I am more grown up now and writing from a more honest place—everything is coming together more organically.”
The funds raised from the campaign will pay for the studio costs, tracking, mixing, mastering, album art and duplication. If the campaign exceeds its goal then Kahn’s next pursuits could include production of a music video and a concert tour near you.
When asked why she decided to crowdfund the EP Kahn explained, “Supporting people is so important and crowdfunding is a community that promotes others”. Kahn has several friends that have successfully raised funds for similar projects. Concerning her own project, numerous people have come out of the woodwork to support her cause and it has been a highly successful experience. Writing the songs for Milk & Honey has been a fun challenge for Kahn. “Finding your spot and your niche and what you are good at and what you are not good at can be a struggle.” But she is writing for her own voice—for a purpose.
Mikaela Kahn has a beautifully strong voice, delivered in a soothing jazzy tone. This coupled with her ambition to tour the world to share her musical talents leads me to believe that there will be much to come from Ms. Kahn. Here is to a soothing musical POP!
