Embedded deep within each of us is the insatiable desire to be unique—to stand out. Yes, people still want to relate to one another socially through similar lifestyles. But even so, the flare of individualism can be found everywhere. The prime suspect of this is the office workspace or more specifically the cubicle. With the vast majority of corporate employees spending their 40 weekly hours in these three-sided partitions, a sizeable market for office knick-knacks has emerged. Within this market are bobble-heads, posters, slinkies, stress balls, the iLusio (read about it here), and puzzles, among others. Krunal Patel, of the Houston-based Fluux Design Lab, LLC, wanted to create such a product that merged the worlds of science and art. He did this with the Fluux LiquiMetal.
The Fluux LiquiMetal is a cylindrical office décor complete with stand and wand. Its geometric design of glass and aluminum will add contemporaryism to any cubicle or desk. The premise of “the perfect distraction”, as labeled on its Kickstarter campaign page, is a ferrofluid (highly magnetized solution) suspended in a carrier fluid. For easy comparison, imagine a lava lamp. The included wand contains two Neodymium magnets that create a magnetic field for the ferrofluid to vary its density and fluidity.
The Fluux LiquiMetal is a pretty captivating desk topper. Of the various office knick-knacks that I have encountered, this one ranks high on the wish list. Apart from its aesthetics, the Fluux can provide spontaneous mental breaks throughout the workday to promote concerted spurts of productivity. If successfully funded, I would expect to see this product in retailers such as Brookestone, Sharper Image, and Touch of Modern.
Just as the Flux Capacitor gave life to the DeLorean, the Fluux LiquiMetal could also provide the needed POP to your office cubicle.
