Back pain is so ubiquitous in the United States that you would be hard-pressed to create a list of 10 adults you know without it. Our increasingly sit-down lifestyles are perpetuating this chronic condition. From the moment you arise in the morning to the time when you retire to your bed, how many times do you sit down? What percentage of your waking hours is spent seated in a car, behind a desk, at a table, on the couch? If you do not have a healthy posture then the majority of your coherent life is literally wearing out your back. Brendan Ridings, of Chicago, Illinois, is bound to comfortably correct the posture that has gone awry in so many of us. He has teamed up with Curv Design and Kickstarter to bring this corrective product to market.
PostureME—the “me” pronounced M-E—is a back support designed for any office chair or vehicle. It is mold-casted with medical grade foam for durability and lightness. The base of the PostureME is wide and flat for proper lumbar support. The top half, lined with massage gel pads, tapers in to relieve pressure by drawing back the shoulders. This is important. Ridings, a personal trainer of eight years, specializes in corrective exercises and therapy. Over the course of his career he noted that “the vast majority of [his] clients would come into the office with hunched shoulders”. This is from continuous bad posture. He related it to a car that was out of alignment. Putting on new tires may appear be a temporary fix but could never properly realign the vehicle. Likewise, massages, adjustments, and heat therapy all provide temporary relief but do not correct the root cause, which is improper posture. Ridings created the PostureME as a means for people to correct their posture with minimal effort and uncompromised comfort.
Proper posture is so important. My wife and I each suffer from some degree of back pain. Most of my coworkers and other associations do as well. In fact, one coworker and I have started a workplace movement of replacing our desk chairs with stability balls for this very purpose. Even so, I still find myself leaning over my computer with hunched shoulders. The market for corrective back pain remedies and supports is enormous (just sample the next five people you see), however, posture is not top of mind for back pain causes or cures. “One of the biggest hurdles is educating the general public”, Ridings admitted. This is in part why he chose to use a crowdfunding platform, namely Kickstarter, which would provide the initial reach.
Brendan Ridings is passionate about the PostureME and the impact that it can have on the quality of life for people—a solid POP!
